OK. It’s the first of October and this is the day that
heralds Nigerian independence from colonial rule. It
is that day that the Union Jack was lowered and the
Green-white-Green that Nigeria has come to be
known for was hoisted.

Green is a colour that signifies life, renewal, nature,
and energy. The beauty of the green colour is that it
is also associated with growth, harmony, freshness,
safety, fertility, and environment.

Furthermore, the Green colour has also been
traditionally related to money, finances, banking,
ambition, greed and jealousy. The importance of the
colour green was brought to light when Pantone (A
significant authority on colours) adopted green as
the colour of the year of 2013 and more specifically
emerald green which happens to be the Nigerian

The colour green is one that is a national colour
and one you’d consider putting on not just on
independence day but on other days without
national significance or connotation.

Choice Of Green

The colour comes in a couple of shades including
the more popular Army green and the lush Emerald
green to mention a few. With the emerald green
having a lighter and cooler shade and
coincidentally being the Nigerian colour shade, it
brings a whole new level to your natural look.

Choice of Clothing Material:

The particular material would help accentuate your
green colour. The ladies can opt for a green silk
dress or one that comes in cotton. In all, it’s better
to get a material that is environmentally friendly.

Green accessories can do a world of good
especially if you have no intention of throwing too
much of the colour into the mix. Green coloured
Beads, green strapped wristwatches, bracelets,
statement necklaces, shoes and bags can help to
serve as complementary accessories without
looking too ‘greenish’.

More so, males can choose to wear green polo
shirts or throw in a green muffler to show their love
for the country. The Nigerian Green can be
comfortably combined with blue, light burgundy red,
white, yellow or black. It can also be combined with
other shades of green, be it the aqua or mint green
which are respectively darker and softer shades.

In all, embrace the Nigerian Green and have a fun
filled day.

Happy Independence day!
